The Motorcycle Diaries, the film about Che Guevara's journey which made him who he was then.
Okay, so I got so much films from my friend Vonny, a cinematography student - a mistake to ask film to cinematography students, I tell you, they will give you so much you barely have space on you internal harddisk - and I have finnished watching one. Yeay! Give applouse to me!

Che Guevara. I mean, who never saw
this pic someplace on the internet? |
Hahaha. But no, I am serious, that's a pretty remarkable feat for me. Well... I think the cost will be very high, tough. I have never imagine that I would prefer some kind of documentary film compared to fiction films. I am more than surprised that I love it. The thing is that I am not very fond to watch videos, long video I mean, after years not watching TV. And this is something that should be considered boring, doesn't it? I doesn't even recognize the name at first (yes, my bad, I am bad at history, politic, etc.), and after a brief search, turn out that he is this person ->
Well, but it certainly is not boring, and clearly hold something more emotionally stiring. We all know that reallity is known for being more unpredictable than fiction. Well... so, after a full round explanation, let's get to the section of why I write this post: to review this film
At the first half I don't really interested in it, but I like this film's vibe, it reminds me of Amelie :). It is the type of stories I like I think, the one where time moves slowly. And we can hold grap of what happened there. As the film goes, I really love how they display that no matter how an uptight, straight, honest, brilliant, hardworking and a bit stoic Ernesto Guevara (Gael Garcia Bernal), will still be boys, who chase girls. And oh, the film is called motorcycles diaries, I think is because of the constant letter Ernesto sent to his mom along the journey.
First they are starting off with Ernesto Guevara de la serna, a 24th year old MD student in Leprosky in specialitation who will graduate with just 3 assignment, going with his friend, Alberto Granados (Roberto de la Serna) setting of a journey with motorcycle they called La Poderosa to celebrate Granado's 30th birthday on April 2nd. They have nicknames for each other, that is Fuser for Ernessto and Mial for Granados. They set of on January 4th from their hometown to their final destination, that is Peninsula of Guajira in Venezuella.
The film consist of their struggle in the road, riding that motorcycle with limited facilities and budget, the person (and females) they meet, on snow, on dessert, on road, on a more civilized place, etc. How they interact with people, how they find ways to survive, sometimes by ALL means, except for the times ernesto is stubborn enough to keep his oath. And last but not least, their unique and endearing friendship.
After a long, full of suffering and struggling trip, losing their motorcycle, finding facts about the region they would never know from books, and having a live-changing experiences, they finnally get to their destination, but then they must part.

That's quite sweet. Because in other areas
they have nothing in common. Except their expertise. |
This film, as the usual rule of good films, teach me something. First that it is very remarkable to have friends who share our passion and dream. It is not essential to have in live yes, but for people to have friends who share the same feeling which usually repressed in society, it is quite iimportant to keep that feelings alive.
I am gratefull that I think, I have some people around me which won't shut up if I back down and decide to be a normal people'. That how 2 completely different personalities can be a good friend and being friend doesn't mean to being twins in all aspects. We should be able to respect choices and lifestyles other that us. And still have fun together.
The second is I love how they potray that even in the most difficult of times, entertaintment is a must. Because if we stay and keep reminded of how bad things is, it will only dread our heart and make our spirit die. Entertainment is a reminded of home, of times you could leisurely do anything you want without worries.

Their "fake" publication in newspaper XD |
Third is that we neeed some trick to survive in live. Don't live your life real straight. Pick some trick that won't cross with your principles and do it! It is needed.
Fourth is that about how, if a man loves a woman he will grant any of her wish, now matter how unlogical it is LOL XD no but why is every great person are potrayed as passionate lover? No fourth is how easy it is to flirt if we have the courage. And confidence.
I also love how dedication and determination and also persistence is potrayed along this movie, as background theme and the main reason how they could achieve their goal. And that there are some sacrifies we need to make.

"Are you looking for a job, too?"
"We are traveling...just because" |
Fifth. How it feels when we are "wasting time" doing something cool, and meet people in critical need, unable, maybe, to understand our logic because something cool is usually not practical, and they can't help situation. Because cool is not needed in real harsh live. Because we can't act like we are one of them. Because we pretend to live like them but with no reason, because they would like to change how their live is if they could. Because our reality is not their reality.
I love how they show how perspective of your world, the world from your mind, is so easy to turn with new places and meeting new people. Be transformed from a travel to an alien world.

"This is humanly impossible!!"
*insert a person who casually done it* |
Sixth. I love it how a burden some people think are very heavy and impossible to hold are of everyday life for others and they done it without so much drama. Or even no drama at all.
Then sense of injustice come and we have to realize how really lucky we are compared to others, because usually we could never have a comparation except to people with somehow same conditions with us. To think that our neighborhood is the luckiest 8% of earth population who could get a house of their own is not funny.
Seventh. I like how in the end, honestly is more appreciated than lie and good words. And symbolic things are appreciated, and races, differences between races, matter that much. How a person that care for real could always be identified right away with their actions, that spirit and the feeling of acceptance is neccesary in live.
|
Because, just. It is neccesary enough. |
That reality is reality, and to change it we can't do it in a calm manner. Something must be done the hard way.
An idealist must know how to put his ideals into actions
That a person, or two, could be so much help and change in a place just by being there for 3 weeks. That people could really be a blessings to other if they choose to. I love how we could also change people.
|
When you have this number of people waving when you are
leaving, you know you already do something good,
unreplaceable, succed in making change in people,
and win their heart. |

That Ernesto can't dance and so do the nuns, and how Granado forget how he (maybe?) shouldn't touch the nun and lift her up when he is excited when seeing Ernesto succed crossing the river and how Ernesto going back with airplane in the cargo section XD and that Granado's birthday is not on April 2nd but 7th August, and how he tell that just to motivate Ernesto, and also how, Ernesto said he had known about it all along. And I love how Granado, the more advanterous and hedonis and playful one of them choose to settle, whereas the Ernesto still go on a more adventorous live.
And I love the closing speech, "This is not a tale about impresive deeds. It's a piece of two lives taken in a moment when they are cruising together along a given path with identity of aspirations and conjunction of dreams. Was our vision too narrow, too partial, too rushed? Were our conclusions too rigid? Maybe... but thet aimless roaming through our enormous America has changed me more than I thought. I am not myself anymore. At least, I am not the same inside."
Make the dying ambition to travel around the world fired up again, no?
I think that's why people always travel to find their true selves. In a time, place and situation new to us, we could observe how we react to things.
And then the story about how both live continue from the era Ernesto known as Che Guevara until he died.
The last, I love how they show the real Alberto Granado and photos of the real journey. It looks so alike, which is maybe more irony than good things. But at least, they tried, they journeyed, and they are not as blind as other people.
The film maybe has a bad side too, but I am not that good observer/critic if I am fascinated by something, so I'll pass that.
Okay so here I will take my leave. Hope this help somehow LOL. Thank you guys who read until the end, goodbye
Please leave a comment if you have already watched the film ^^
